§1Definition

FastForward Deployed Engineering (FFDE) is the practice of an engineer working on a small business's real problem for a single session, at its counter or from a distance, equipped with a repertoire of already-solved operational patterns and with tools that adapt them, so that when the session ends the business runs a working system that it owns, understands and maintains without the engineer. It is a form of forward deployed engineering:

§2Why it must be fast

In a micro-enterprise the engineer's time is nearly the whole cost, so FFDE works only if adapting to a new client costs almost nothing. A repertoire of patterns, accumulated across many small businesses whose problems fall into a few families (orders, stock, payments, appointments), and generative tools that fit a pattern to this business during the session make that possible. Depth is accumulated between clients, not within one. The repertoire is mathematical: orders, stock, payments and appointments are, underneath, a few models (queues, inventories, schedules, forecasts), and each new business is one more instance of one of them. That is why understanding can be brought to the session instead of built during it.

§3Conditions

An engagement is FFDE only if:

  1. it is done on the client's real operation, in person or remotely;
  2. the system is in use before the session ends;
  3. it is built on the tools and habits the client already has;
  4. the client owns it: no recurring payment, and the data stay with the client;
  5. the client, or someone within reach, can operate and repair it;
  6. the price is set against the client's revenue, not the engineer's time;
  7. the result is measured in hours saved and money recovered, not in features;
  8. what the session teaches returns to the repertoire.

Without (b) it is a project; without (d), a subscription; without (e), a dependency; without (h), a one-off.

§1Definición

FastForward Deployed Engineering (FFDE), en castellano ingeniería matemática desplegada, es una forma de hacer ingeniería en la que un ingeniero trabaja sobre el problema real de un negocio pequeño durante una sola sesión, en su mostrador o a distancia, y, al terminarla, deja funcionando un sistema que el negocio puede usar y mantener por su cuenta. El ingeniero no llega a averiguar qué necesita el negocio: llega con un repertorio de soluciones ya probadas en negocios parecidos y con herramientas que las adaptan a este en particular. Es una variante del forward deployed engineering, la ingeniería desplegada:

§2Por qué tiene que ser rápido

En una microempresa el tiempo del ingeniero es casi todo el costo, así que FFDE solo funciona si adaptarse a un cliente nuevo cuesta casi nada. Lo hacen posible un repertorio de soluciones acumulado en muchos negocios pequeños, cuyos problemas se repiten (pedidos, inventario, cobros, agenda), y herramientas generativas que ajustan una solución a este negocio durante la sesión. La profundidad se acumula entre clientes, no dentro de uno. El repertorio es matemático: pedidos, inventario, cobros y agenda son, por debajo, unos pocos modelos (colas, inventarios, calendarios, pronósticos), y cada negocio nuevo es un caso más de alguno de ellos. Por eso la comprensión se trae a la sesión en vez de construirse en ella.

§3Condiciones

Un trabajo es FFDE solo si:

  1. se hace sobre la operación real del cliente, en persona o a distancia;
  2. el sistema queda en uso antes de que termine la sesión;
  3. se construye sobre las herramientas y los hábitos que el cliente ya tiene;
  4. el cliente es el dueño: no hay pago recurrente y los datos quedan con él;
  5. el cliente, o alguien cercano, puede operarlo y repararlo;
  6. el precio se fija según lo que vende el negocio, no según las horas del ingeniero;
  7. el resultado se mide en horas ahorradas y dinero recuperado, no en funciones;
  8. lo que se aprende en la sesión vuelve al repertorio.

Sin (b) es un proyecto; sin (d), una suscripción; sin (e), una dependencia; sin (h), un trabajo suelto.
